Tunes
I've been listening to music the way I used to in middle school. One artist, one album at a time - for hours, days, weeks uninterrupted. In high school I focused on certain songs / mix CDs that got me all emotionally revved up, then in college I started monitoring the indie and local scene. I wanted something I could see live or that I could dance to or that I could talk about - music was fun and functional. I got sick of the indie scene pretty fast, and thus haven't downloaded much new that wasn't a show tune or big band since late 2006.

Now I'm back to listening to music seriously - not as background, not as an activity enhancer. I read artist background and liner notes, mentally rank albums and EPs. For the past couple weeks I was all about Kaki King. Now I've moved on to Nine Inch Nails. Boards of Canada is next up, but after that I'm taking suggestions. Doesn't have to be new, just something I haven't spent time exploring in depth. Bring 'em on - but you have to tell me why you think I'd enjoy/appreciate it. No exceptions!

Indie pop will always be my greatest old flame, but lush music is probably my one true love. Lots of layers, electronic and otherwise, none of that bare singer-songwriter acoustic guitar shit. Things I love and have already explored extensively include The Smiths, TV on the Radio, Wolf Parade, MGMT, The Helio Sequence, Stars, DeVotchKa, AIR, Badly Drawn Boy, Weather Report, Interpol.

Sound is way, way more important than lyrics. Actually, I can take or leave lyrics, and I leave the ones that are overly sentimental / distractingly political.

First off, the last few lines in your post make me cringe. I've tried to see other people's perspectives better this year, but that's just one that I will never be able to follow. To each their own. How do you like Stars without the lyrics being important?

Given what you seem to like, the only things I listen to that I think you'd enjoy are

1. Telefon Tel Aviv - Everything they've done is wonderful, but Fahrenheit Fair Enough (2001) is extremely good. I don't want to sound pretentious trying to describe it, but it feels like dance music slowed down to me. I used to enjoy working to it, but now I find that I am paying attention to it too closely to be able to do anything else. I've never understood the relationship between music and creating a mood, but I do with this album. I'll admit I might be wrong - but I think you could get lost in this.

2. The Books - I'd be really surprised if you don't already listen to these guys. Sampling/mixing is really take-it-or-leave-it to me, but I really think this is an interesting project. I hawk this band at every single person, but really, I think you'd appreciate them. I think we've talked about this, and the more I consider it, the more I think that BECAUSE I think you'd like them, you HATE them. Not sure. Listen to "Getting the Done Job".

3. Arovane - I've never been a big fan of ambient music, or whatever style this is (I think ambient works best) but this band works in that indescribable way. It strikes me the way what little Kaki King I've heard does. Lilies (2004) is pretty excellent. Maybe you can appreciate that connection, or maybe I'm far off base, but at least check out a track or two and see.

We used to listen to the same things, and now do not. I can listen to bands that barely have any music at all for lyrical content. These three are probably the only ones that don't fit in that. Maybe you'd like them.

The Flaming Lips - layer after mind-blowing layer of psychedelic goodness (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots)

LCD Soundsystem - rockin' awesome electronic music (Sound of Silver)

Fela Kuti - everyone should listen to Fela Kuti, he invented afrobeat and could outfunk George Clinton with his eyes closed (Open/Closed)

Rebecca says:

Neutral Milk Hotel - beautiful, beautiful music (In the aeroplane over the sea)

Beirut - similar to Devotchka (Long Gisland EP)

Cocorosie - storytime techno folk (The adventures of ghosthorse and stillborn)

Hot Chip - the song "touch too much" is really good (made in the dark)

Silver Mt Zion - beautiful dark layers of harmonizing good shit (He has left us alone)

From Under the Cork Tree - Fall Out Boy
Take This To Your Grave - Fall Out Boy

That's about all I listen to. Maybe mix it in with some P.O.D. or Papa Roach.

the verve has lots and lots of layers, and lots of sounds/noises/relooped inverted guitar licks, etc. urban hymns is good, albeit their most poppy album. their new one, forth, is really good, and their two older albums are even further out there (one was written after the band was on an x bender for a month or so)

ghostland observatory. new electronic stuff, makes me move. saw him live at roo and blew me away.

ive really been digging on the new modest mouse cd too. no noises you havent heard before, but pretty busy guitar interplay. and i really like the lyrical harmonies with the music.

neil young, esp. his older stuff with crazy horse (and esp his live stuff with crazy horse) is pretty good. obvious pregrunge roots, and extended jams that are just fuzzed out. he plays guitar solos that remind of a schizo speaking in stream of conciousness. lots of noise for a 4 piece band, and the rhythm section is pretty tight. check out like a hurricane, down by the river, cowgirl in the sand, fucking up...although caution because sometimes he can be the acoustic singer songwriter guy too.

SOUNDTRIBE SECTOR 9. their whole sound is based more on polyphonic percussion than harmony or melody. electronic and live music...these guys are awesome. check out interplanetary escape vehicle. that whole album is pretty bad ass.

mars volta, minus the bear, muse, umphrey's mcgee are also good idears.

I'm sure you've probably heard it, but a quick recommendation is the Beach Boy's Good Vibrations. I can't recall exactly how many layers, but it's so complex that the song is referred to as a "pocket symphony." After listening to it, Bob Dylan said that Brian Wilson should donate his ear to the Smithsonian. The song cost as much to produce as most entire albums did.

Also, the entire Pet Sounds album is phenomenal. Almost single-handedly responsible for driving the Beatles to create Sgt. Pepper, hailed as the greatest album in rock and roll history.

More to come, but need to browse my collection

I'd like to have a look at your collection...sounds like its pretty extensive. We should get together and trade hard drives sometime (there's no way to say that without making it sound like a euphemism for something else), although I doubt there's much I have that you wouldn't.

1) justice - cross. electronic mastery in the vein of daft punk.

2) minus the bear - highly refined pirates. electro-prog-rock. i love everything minus the bear has touched.

3) neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea. this album should change your life. the best melodies since the beatles/beach boys. and trumpets.

4) mastodon - blood mountain. assuming you enjoy metal in some way or another. this is the best metal album. colony of birchmen is one of my favorite songs, ever.
